PROVERB PRACTICALS

Proverbs 6:30-33,  Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.  But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

There is no argument to the fact that stealing another man’s goods is sin.

Thieves are contemptible and ought to be punished for God has said Thou shalt not steal.

But there are circumstances which tempt a man to steal in order to preserve his or his family’s life.

When this occurs the thief may be pitied and there may be compassion extended which will mitigate any punishment considered, for there are at times mitigating circumstances.

But this same pity, this same understanding will never be present when the crime of adultery raises its ugly head.

There are never any reasons to excuse the stealing of another man’s wife.

There are never any justifiable reasons to excuse the breaking of vows.

To excuse the stealing of bread to satisfy hunger is one thing but to excuse the stealing of a man’s wife to satisfy lust, to satisfy carnal desire is never to be considered.

Therefore one who commits adultery has no understanding because if he did have understanding he would not do that which has no remedy.

For understanding brings reasonable behavior and doing things in which there is no remedy is not reasonable.

Men are under obligation to understand.

God so provides for men to understand for he has given his word to man.

There is no excuse for the lack of understanding.

If any man lack wisdom, let him ask, God tells us.

God is at the ready to provide his grace.

Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastics  7:25,26,  I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness: And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her and faith pleases God.

And knowing God’s word brings faith.

So one who commits adultery has no understanding nor has faith.

For he has committed that which will blot his character as long as he lives.

The adulterer opens himself up to vengeance,

he destroys his reputation, his name is no longer respected,

and by this his wife and children will suffer,

and his word is no longer recognized as word of any worth.

There is no monetary punishment or fine that can repay.

It may be forgiven but it leaves a scar that will never go away.

The example of David who committed adultery with Bathsheba still lives with us as recorded in the book of 2 Samuel 12:7-14.

Be sure your sin will find you out when God has a faithful prophet like Nathan who is faithful to do God’s will.

David, a man after God’s own heart, committed his adultery in secret but he forgot the scripture of Genesis that told him: "Thou God seest me!"

When you forget the word of God it reveals a lapse in faith.

So God sent Nathan to remind David that He saw his adultery and what destruction to his soul that adultery would bring.

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

David looks for greener grass

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme (David brought reproach to the name of the Lord) , the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

We have seen in recent years and recent days how that which was done in secret was not able to be kept secret and because of certain revelations forced an openness in admission of sin.

Our former President did that which was sin, in secret and said on numerous occasions he hoped to keep what he did private.

Don’t we love darkness because are deeds are evil?

Don’t we love privacy for our sin?

Our former President forgot, in faithlessness, that God is light, that God seest me.

And God saw to it that the thing that he did was known in all the world and before all under the sun.

The prestige of our entire country suffered because of his sin of adultery.

And how our former president has scrambled to make a legacy for himself which will overtake the legacy of his sin.

But the legacy of his sin will outweigh anything that he thinks good, that he has done during the last eight years.

For in this life, the stink of sin holds on longer than the sweet aroma of purity.

Oh, how the sin of adultery destroys that soul.
