PROVERB PRACTICALS

Proverbs 14:1,  Every wise woman buildeth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

As is the case throughout the book of Proverbs this verse presents a comparison between wisdom and foolishness.

In this case it is a wise woman and a foolish woman. No in-between woman here.

The Bible does not waste time talking about all the different varieties of women or men.

It does not analyze how a person became foolish and try to make excuses for foolishness.

It simply says that if a woman is wise she is a builder and if a woman is foolish she is in the demolition business.

The wise woman's work takes time but the foolish woman demolishes quickly what has been built.

The wise woman is making a profit and the foolish woman is in the red. She is losing the business.

What is the business? It is the house business.

What kind of house are we talking about here?

Are we talking about spiritual things or physical things?

The Proverbs talk about both. We come into a physical world when we are born. We exist in this world and we soon learn its ways.

We do not know the spiritual world because we, (our spirit) are dead in trespasses and sins.

While we are only physical this verse still is useful for us because its truth also applies to us in the physical realm.

But the greater use of this truth is spiritual because the greater benefits will be gained in the spiritual than in the physical.

What does build mean?

How do you build a house?

Why is a woman building it?

Who is she building it for?

What does it mean to be wise?

How did the foolish woman get a house in the first place?

What does it mean to be foolish?

Why the use of the word pluck?

Pluck: to pull with sudden force or effort, or to pull off, out or from, with a twitch. To pluck down: to demolish or to reduce to a lower state.

How do you pluck down a house with your hands?

Are there any Bible examples of wise women who built their house? Sara, Timothy's grandmother Lois, his mother Eunice

Are there any Bible examples of foolish women who plucked down their house? Jezebel

She knows that the foundation of her house has already been laid and that foundation is Jesus Christ.

She therefore builds her house on that foundation and does not look or make another foundation.

A woman builds her house by making up for many of her husbands defects.

Her strengths fill in his weaknesses.

She builds her house by yielding her own will to the will that God has for her.

She builds her house by cheerfully assuming her God directed position of submission.

She builds her house by looking after the health of her family.

She builds her house by being a good example to her children.

She builds her house by teaching her children.

She builds her house by educating her children for God and eternity, instead of educating them to shine in the vanity of the world.

She is careful and frugal so as to increase her households financial stability.
